Snap UV
Monitor

In collaboration with the UCI All of Us Cancer Research Program, I designed a wearable UV smart monitor specifically for lifeguards with the intention to prevent them from being over exposed to harmful UV radiation. This inovative device was tailored to the unique needs of lifeguards, combining functionality with a sleek durable design suited. for outdoor use.

Problem

Lifeguards and first responders spend long hours in the sun, often relying on inconsistent protection. This constant exposure raises their risk of skin damage and cancer, while existing solutions are too complex or impractical for their fast-paced work. Existing solutions tend to be too complex or impractical.

Solution

We developed a wearable UV index monitor paired with a simple app, giving lifeguards and first responders real-time alerts when exposure reached dangerous levels. The device was designed to be lightweight, durable, and easy to use, fitting seamlessly into their daily routines. By making UV safety visible and actionable, it empowered users to take timely precaution.

Research Points

Primary research included interviews and ride-alongs with lifeguards and first responders to map routines, identify moments of missed reapplication, and field-test comfort, waterproofing, battery life, and visibility of alerts during real shifts. Secondary research reviewed CDC/NIOSH/WHO guidance on UV exposure.
